*Wednesday, July 28th: Tasting of Spanish Wines with Rich Haynes from Dionysus
From: 6pm to 9pm
Cost: $5 per person (will be refunded with any purchase made)
Rich is back after a trip to Spain with some great Spanish wines to show us. So, we welcome back to the store for a tasting of some of his favorite finds. His picks are as follows:
2009 Pazo de Galegos Albarino, Rias Biaxas
This Albarino went through partial malolactic fermentation and was raised in stainless steel. Medium straw-colored, it offers up aromas of mineral, dried herbs, lemon, and honeysuckle. Concentrated and lively on the palate, it will provide fine drinking over the next 3 years.
NV Cresta Azul, Penedes
A blend of Macabeo, Moscatel, Parellada, Xarel-lo. This lightly fizzy, mildly sweet wine is about as perfect a warm weather wine as you can get.
2008 Bodega Enguera Pelta, Valencia
"The 2008 Pelta is 80% Tempranillo and 20% Monastrell raised in stainless steel. It exhibits a fragrant nose of underbrush, blackberry, and blueberry pie. Surprisingly rich and deep for a wine of this price, it should drink well for another three years." 88pts Wine Advocate
2008 Vinos Sin Ley M5, Yecla
"The 2008 M5 is 100% Monastrell fermented and raised in stainless steel (as are all the Sin-Ley wines). Dark ruby-colored, it offers an enticing nose of violets, spices, and blueberry. Dense, layered, and tasty, this smooth-textured wine will drink well for another three years."
89pts Wine Advocate; 90pts International Wine Cellar (Steven Tanzer)
2008 Barco de Piedra, Ribera del Duero
"The 2008 Barco de Piedra is 100% Tempranillo aged for 5 months in French and American oak. A glass-staining opaque purple, it offers up an enticing bouquet cedar, spice box, violets, cassis, and black cherry. This is followed by a rich, flavorful, firm wine that will evolve for 1-2 years. This lengthy bargain will drink well through 2015. It is what over-delivering is all about."
90pts Wine Advocate
2008 Casa Gran del Siurana GR-174, Priorat
The wine is 35% Garnatxa, 30% Carinyena and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon fermented to 15.0% alc. with 50% of the wine aged 9 months in French oak barrels. Ruby red with garnet hues, this has a full and alluring bouquet of savoury red berry fruits along with herb, earth and meaty nuances. The palate is sweet and rich with fruit, allied to a well-structured palate composed of substantial tannins, and the wine is attractively robust without any coarseness.
